Supporters of GSMC, ACHIK take out bike rally in Tura against Ampareen for opposing Winter Capital

Tura, July 20: Supporters of the Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) and the ACHIK organisation undertook a bike rally in Tura on Thursday afternoon.

The supporters also raised slogans against Ampareen Lyngdoh and criticised the minister for her statement opposing Tura Winter Capital.

Ampareen Lyngdoh, who is on a tour of Garo Hills starting Thursday to inspect the departments and hold discussions with officials.

Meghalaya’s Health Minister arrived in Resubelpara, North Garo Hills, on Thursday and will be in Tura in the evening to hold a review meeting with government officials at Tura Circuit House on Friday morning before her departure for South Garo Hills.

The GSMC and ACHIK organisations have opposed her visit in protest against her statement earlier this week, wherein she termed the demand for Tura as the second capital of the state as untenable.

“These demands should not be entertained, that is my personal view, because we will be in trouble if every district comes up with new demands. It will be difficult for us to administrate,” Lyngdoh said on Tuesday while addressing the media.

Tura Winter Capital has been a long-standing demand of the people in the region due to its strategic location and potential for economic growth. However, Lyngdoh’s statement has sparked controversy and drawn criticism from various organisations that believe that Tura deserves to be recognised as a second capital. Despite the opposition, Lyngdoh remains determined to proceed with her visit to South Garo Hills and address the concerns of the local community.
