TORONTO — A seven-car crash has brought out a caution on the first lap of IndyCar’s Streets of Toronto race after cars stacked up at the exit of Turn 1.
It appeared Jack Harvey didn’t know he had two cars wide on the outside, got into the right side of Ryan Hunter Reay, who pushed Tom Blomqvist into the wall. Santino Ferrucci, Benjamin Pedersen and Graham Rahal stacked up on one another and Alexander Rossi was collected with Hunter Reay’s car.
Harvey, Blomqvist and Pedersen are out of the race.
Rahal put it in reverse, didn’t stall and got through the runoff to try and catch the field, staying on the lead lap. He’ll likely need to pit for a new front wing but moved up 7 spots from 27th to 20th.
LAP 41: Two more cautions
Romain Grosjean hit the wall at the exit of Turn 11, saying on the radio, “I lost the steering from my hands again. I don’t know what’s going on.”
The race went back to green for just seconds before Kyle Kirkwood hit and spun Helio Castroneves, causing another yellow. Alex Palou narrowly avoided Castroneves. Kirkwood would be given a stop-and-go penalty for avoidable contact.
It appeared Castroneves’ day is over, joining Blomqvist and extending Meyer Shank Racing’s difficult season.
