Crews extinguish electric car fire on I-140 E near US-421

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Crews responded to the scene of a vehicle fire on I-140 E near US-421 on Thursday afternoon, July 20.

“An electric vehicle struck a large metal object in the roadway tearing open the bottom of the car. It also damaged the storage compartment where the batteries are located under the car. The fire was extremely hard to put out until the car was placed on its side and copious amounts of water were applied to extinguish the fire. The fire originated under the vehicle in the Battery storage area. Extra engine crews and water tankers were called in to complete fire extinguishment,” Deputy Fire Marshal Raymond Griswold wrote in a press release.

New Hanover County Fire Rescue, New Hanover County Fire Marshal’s Office, NC Highway Patrol, New Hanover County Sheriff’s Dept. , NC DOT Bridge Maintenace and IMAP all responded to the scene. No injuries were reported.

Per the N.C. Department of Transportation’s DriveNC website, it started at around 4:46 p.m. By 6:30 p.m., WECT observed that the car was no longer emitting smoke or flames.
