4 Women Drown After Car Plunges Into Canal

Mandya: On Saturday evening, tragedy struck when a vehicle carrying five people, including driver Manoj, fell into the Turuganoor branch of Visvesvaraya Canal within the Arakere police limits. Four of the passengers, identified as Mahadevamma, Rekha, Sanjana, and Mahadevi, lost their lives in the accident, while Manoj managed to swim to safety.

According to Yatish N, the superintendent of police, the absence of a peripheral wall on the canal banks was the reason for the accident. The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to slip into the canal waters. Mahadevamma, who was traveling to Doddamalagodu from Coravanhalli, hired a cab to invite her relatives for a family function at Adichunchanagiri, was among the deceased.

The incident occurred at 8:30 pm on Saturday, Local villagers rushed to the scene after hearing about the accident and helped retrieve the bodies from the canal. The Arakere police have registered a case, and an investigation into the accident is currently underway.

The Turuganoor branch of Visvesvaraya Canal is located in the southern part of Bangalore, and it is a significant waterway in the area. The absence of a peripheral wall on the canal’s banks, however, has raised concerns about the safety of travelers on the nearby roads.
